Video Summer School 2020: Janet Planet

During Tritone at Bjorklunden week every summer, the inimitable Janet Planet radiates a wonderful spirit of joy. This summer, the spirit is virtual, but it’s still very much there.

This demonstration was made for singers but holds benefit for all of us. Janet has taken Chet Baker’s scat solo on the standard, “There Will Never Be Another You” (go here for that, with transcription), and applied words to it — a technique called “vocalese.” It’s an incredibly difficult exercise, but what an outstanding way to “get inside” the rhythm of an excellent solo. And despite the difficulty, when Janet does it, the words even make sense!

We non-singers would benefit just from feeling and absorbing the phrasing and rhythm of Chet’s solo, and, depending on your level of ambition, even transcribing it.

Enjoy!
