Audio Summer School 2020: Tom Washatka

Tom Washatka, sax faculty at Bjorklunden, has given us a two-fer here.

On one hand, these recordings, from Tom’s latest CD, “When Friends Speak,” are the product of two fine musicians demonstrating what a musical conversation should be all about. It’s readily apparent that Tom and his long-time buddy Scott Dercks on guitar have come to know each other really well over the years and the result of that time spent together in happy music-making is brilliant.

On the other hand, these duo recordings provide us rhythm-section players — bassists, drummers, and vibraphonists — a fine opportunity to play along, turning an excellent duo into a larger combo. Even pianists might want to take the challenge of comping for these two monsters without getting in anyone’s way.
